The songs on this album were inspired by, and written for the landscapes, animals and trees of the urban, yet densely vegetated suburb, Umbilo, just to the south of Durban city centre.

It still amazes me how even here, in the city of Durban, we have the privilege of living alongside the Umbilo River, where we hear the calls of fish eagles and see the turquoise blur of brown hooded kingfishers flying in our gardens. Natal mahoganies and sprawling ficus trees line the streets and provide cavernous shade in our parks. Vervet monkeys are plentiful and cheeky, living above the resting dead in the trees of Stellawood Cemetery.

These songs were born in Umbilo, and I hope they reflect something of the spirit of this place.

This album was made using a 6 string guitar, 12 string guitar, banjo, kalimba, orbaphone, and a garden full of chirping birds and insects.

I think there is a wonderful sense of flow and balance throughout the album. Learning a bit about how the album was recorded, layered and arranged has made me appreciate it all the more.
